If you suspect there is a dead animal under your house, take action immediately. The longer you wait, the worse the situation – and smell – will become.

To find and remove a dead animal under your house, here are some steps you can take:

  1. Use your sense of smell to find the dead animal. Using your nose is the most effective way to search for dead wildlife under your house. The smell will become stronger the closer you are to finding the dead body.
  2. A swarm of flies can indicate the presence of a decomposing body. Looking for swarms of flies is another method you can use to find a dead animal.
  3. Get rid of the carcass immediately. Once you have found the dead animal, use protective gloves to remove the body and properly dispose of it. Be sure to follow the rules regarding dead animal disposal in your area.
  4. Clean and disinfect the area. Use an enzymatic solution to clean up the area and let the place dry up. Replace all items that may have been covered by fluids from the dead animal.

Prevention

Seal up any entrances to your house. Look for holes that an animal could use to enter your house, and seal those up.

Check all vents and other covers around your house.  If you notice that a cover suddenly disappeared, or there is some change around vent areas, those signs are indicators that an animal may have made its way under your house.

Keep an eye out for strange things going on under your house. The smell may be due to garbage, but it could also be caused by something else. Investigate as soon as you suspect anything strange. This will keep the problem from growing out of hand.
